Who Is This Workshop For?

Anyone wanting to start a worm farm and/or compost bin at home.
This course will be of interest to keen gardeners, who want to recycle their waste into a beneficial soil conditioner.
Also, anyone interested in reducing the amount of their waste going to landfill. Landfills contribute to greenhouse gases.
Kids LOVE worms too – it’s a great opportunity to teach them about the environment – or to let them teach YOU about it.

Start A Larger Worm Farm – If You Have  A Large Property, Small Farm Etc . . .

If you want to start a large worm farm, for a large property and do not know much about the subject, this is a GREAT WAY TO START!
Start off your new passion the right way.
Learn the ropes with a small system and then scale up later.
Some aspects of larger systems touched on in the workshop. See details below.

What Farm Do I Get To Take Home, With The Add On That Includes Worms And A Farm:

Choose One Of The Following Three Options To Take Home: (With The Full Ticket Only):

  1. A bucket worm farm with mesh in the lid.
  2. A Styrofoam box worm farm (the only one with a leachate drain.)
  3. A garden feeding station bucket.

Or choose an extra farm (without worms) for just $10 per extra farm.
(For example, you may like to take the bucket farm and also a garden feeding station.)

All of the farms come with:

  1. 100 grams of composting worms – approx. 500 worms.
  2. Full written/printed out instructions in the Student Guide: my 4 page “Quick Start” instructions AND my E-book, “The FAQ Guide” – total 42 pages.
  3. A live microbial starter culture of worms, microorganisms and microbes.Way superior to buying just worms.
  4. A shaker with 500 grams of worm farm conditioner / mineral supplement as recommended by me.
A valuable amendment to the worms nutrition and of benefit to your plants via the Vermicompost produced.
  5. A 500 gram refill bag of conditioner.
Yes – an EXTRA refill for your shaker bottle!

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Each Farm?

All of the farms that I make are in one way or another diverted from the waste stream of businesses.
The Styrofoam boxes were/are destined for landfill before I get them.
The buckets I use would otherwise be chipped up, melted down and reused as plastic – but we can get some use out of them before that happens !

  1. A bucket worm farm with mesh in lid
    – This is the style of farm often used by professional growers in the USA.
    – The benefit is that it’s indestructible (almost).
    – The hole in the lid, with midgie mesh, lets in air, but keeps out most insects.
    – The disadvantage is that it doesn’t have a drain for the leachate. So you have to be careful about moisture control.
    – It must be covered from the rain or the worms will drown.
  2. A Styrofoam box worm farm (the only one with a leachate drain)
    – The benefit of this one is it’s drain for collecting liquid, “leachate”.
    – It can be placed in the rain as it has a lid without holes, so it is mostly rain resistant.
    – The mesh in the air holes helps keep out most insects.
    – The disadvantage is it’s not as indestructible as a bucket, being made from styro foam.
    – Still, a great way to start your journey. You will probably upgrade the farm later, or copy it’s design to make more.
  3. A garden feeding station bucket.
    – This one is GREAT for getting worms working right IN YOUR GARDEN !
    – The top can be disguised with a plant in a pot saucer. Also great to protect it from the sun.

Remember, Even If You Dont Take The Add On Worm Package, You Still Get:

  1. Full written/printed out instructions: my 4 page “Quick Start” instructions AND my E-book, “The FAQ Guide” – total 42 pages.
  2. A printed “Worm Foods To Avoid List”. Great for easy reference while you learn the ropes. The WHY of each will be covered in the workshop.

Learn from my years of experience helping thousands on Facebook and YouTube – what works and what doesn’t.

Workshop Details – What You Will Learn:

During the workshop, I will go through subjects such as:

  • Basic non-worm composting. How to set up a compost heap or bin for all of your excess stuff, like grass clippings etc.
  • How to look after and care for your new worm farm.
  • How to easily set up another new worm farm – FOR FREE – from the materials you get today.
  • How to feed a worm farm so that you reduce common errors encountered with feeding.
  • Often misunderstood, the role of carbon vs nitrogen in the worm farm.
  • How to harvest the worm farm.
  • How to apply the products of a worm farm – Vermicompost & Leachate
  • How to make a liquid from the Vermicompost that’s super economical and highly beneficial – “Aerated Castings Tea”
  • Do’s and don’ts and common mistakes.
  • How to fix common problems you may encounter in the future.
  • “Worm Foods To Avoid List”. The WHY of each will be covered in the workshop.
  • Worm species identification and uses. Why composting & garden worms are different.
  • How to encourage native earthworms in your garden.
  • How to use the Vermicompost you produce.
  • The liquid that drains from the worm farm. “Leachate” has a bad reputation. Find out WHY and HOW to use it successfully.
  • Making aerated teas, non aerated teas and extracts from Vermicompost.
  • The benefits to your garden from using Vermicompost.
  • WHY Vermicompost is special – what makes it so.
  • A brief look into LARGER systems. Advantages, disadvantages, requirements etc (Continuous Flow Through, Windrow & WEDGE Systems.)
  • and many more subjects . . .

The planned workshop will go for about 2 hours, but I plan for extra time to answer any questions and to spend a few minutes with each student on hand over of your farm on the day. So we could run “over time” to 2.5 or 3 hours.
Please arrive early if you have a lot of questions, I can answer some before we start.

How Many People Can Come With Me?

It is definitely ok to bring a guest with you.
A spouse or partner, friend or even your parent may like to come along.
If you bring some younger children, we do learn a little about worm physiology and mating, but not a lot, really.
Maybe they could sit down the back and play on their phone, tablet or laptop?
Well behaved children are invited at no charge to listen with you to your lesson.

If you want to bring more than 1 other person, please contact me prior to paying for your ticket, so that we are on the same page; and so that I can cater to all attendees.
I will presume everyone will bring one other person.

Refreshments:

Cold water and reusable (washed up) cups will be provided on the day. (Reduce-reuse-recycle.)
Please do not bring food into the classroom – our training room hosts would prefer it that way.
