Make A Mini Worm Farm To Take Home With Worms – Kids Entertainment Or Activity
If you are looking for the instructions for the mini worm farms:
Kids Activity#1 : “Make A Mini Worm Farm To Take Home, With Worms: Dig & Discover Your Own Worms”
Join commercial worm farmer Brian “The Worm Man” for this unique activity as he teaches children (and adults) about reducing waste.
Children are invited to make a mini worm farm out of a 2 litre milk bottle, repurposed from the waste stream, and other materials, which are all supplied.
Children “Dig & Discover” their own worms from trays where some active worm farm material has been tipped out.
We could pair this activity with another minor activity such as:
- We bring worms & composting into the activity by letting the kids “Dig & Discover” in active worm farm material.
- We bring a Nature Discovery tray with magnifiers.
- One of the other set activities that we offer.
Australian Curriculum & classroom extension information available for teachers & educators.
Options:
♦ Options for timing: Lesson plans, with or without this activity, are available for activities ranging from 15 to 20 minutes per group, up to 2 hours per group.
♦ Add magnifiers: Children investigate the microscopic world in the Dig & Discover trays. I can supply approx. 25 “40 power loupe magnifiers”.
♦ I can conduct short, free/included presentations during the day, on worm farming and reducing waste (during day-long events.)
The Background Of The Milk Bottles That We Use:
We collect 2 litre milk bottles from a cafe that saves used coffee grounds for us to feed to our worms.
The milk bottles are then washed out on the same day and stored for the events.
This is in the spirit of “REPURPOSE” from the “Waste Hierarchy”:
We hope to teach children (and their parents) that they can REPURPOSE something already in the waste stream – and then still recycle it afterwards.
We attach a sticker to the milk bottle at the event with the child’s name on it, and a download link for instructions, which saves paper waste.
The sticker also reinforces the waste hierarchy:
“To help reduce waste, learn to: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Re-Purpose, Recycle, Compost, Dispose“
Background:
Kids activities are based around worm farming & composting:
