Compost as worm bedding

Kyle bagley asked 6 years ago

I have some age compost I’ve been using a little bit in my worm bin and was wondering what is your opinion on age compost as worm bedding?

Hi Kyle,

As “compost” could be anything, the answer is it depends.
It depends on what went into the compost, and more importantly, IF it has finished hot composting.

BEDDING describes the safe portion of the worms environment, so filling it with something that may get hot, or have items in it that are not the best for the worms, it may not be the best thing to do.

COMPOST if fully finished, is ready for the garden as-is, and would gain only a little by being put through the worm system.

Personally I would recommend using mostly brown cardboard, with a little bit of newspaper – and if not an indoor bin, use a tiny bit of well aged leaves or grass, if available.

There may be no nutrition left in the compost, if it has finished, so its benefit to the worms, in the best case, would be slight.

RISK outweighs REWARD for this scenario – so I would personally not use it “as bedding”.

Thanks for asking your question

Brian
