How do you keep your worm bin warm indoors in winter time?

Hi Kyle
There are a few ways to keep the worm bin warm:

  • move it into a room that is warmer – this may be where the hot water heater is
  • wrap something around it to conserve the heat inside of it – an old blanket, or styrofoam from an old vegetable box, or any of the space films/emergency blankets you can get
  • If it is a larger farm, you could “slightly overfeed” one end, so the food heats up, then the next week do the same up the other end. The problem here is working out what is safe to do
  • you can buy pet heating mats or seedling heating mats quite cheaply.

If you use a heating mat, just be aware that if it doesn’t have a thermostat that you can set the temperature on, you’ll have to monitor the temperature of the bin and may have to put the heater on a timer for best results.

I haven’t bought one so I can’t advise you on which ones are better or worse.
