removing worms from casting

Margaret Ortiz asked 2 years ago

when I put the bottom tray of my worm farm into the garden – it had loads of castings in it – I was horrified to see loads of worms in there also. I tried to rescue some of them but it was impossible. Will they all die? There was a load of mushroom compost already in the garden.  How can I get the worms to move out of the bottom tray so I can use the castings without putting them in the garden too?
PS love your stuff

Hi Margaret
Essentially the plastic box systems often dont work as they should.
Usually over feeding, under bedding and over watering (on purpose to produce leachate, a myth, or from rain) contributes….These will keep worms in the lower levels.
You can make aerated tea from the castings and return the worms in the tea bag to the farm (they survive tea making) – and you can improve how you care for the worms.

You can also do a pyramid/light harvest to remove leftover worms – check out the free harvesting guide.

Plenty of free articles on my help page to improve your worm farm:
