Hi Kyle,
It’s best to treat VC like a worm farm – they need to be kept moist and have air available, as they will have worms and cocoons in them, as well as microbes.
Don’t seal it in a plastic bag – it needs air.
And if storing VC long term, you’ll have to replenish the moisture in them.
The best way I’ve found is to use plastic buckets or totes, with the lid cracked open to supply air, but limit drying out.
You can put a few sheets of newspaper on top, then dampen them, to help keep things moist. You’ll have to re-dampen them regularly to keep them in the best condition.
You can also place some “bait” like pumpkin or apple under the newspaper to attract newly hatched babies and any worms you may have missed in the harvest.
IF they HAVE been sealed in plastic, or dried out, this will harm them as there are microbes/bacteria alive in them, not to mention unborn worms.
Some say you can reinvigorate them with moisture and air as the microbes “estivate”, or go to sleep – but they certainly may not be as good as fresh, properly maintained cast.
Thanks for asking your question,
Regards,
Brian
